A study published in the journal Neuropsychologia reported that seeing an attractive smiling face activates people’s orbitofrontal cortex, the region in their brain that process sensory rewards. In other words, your smile rewards them!
But what if you don’t like to smile? What if your teeth are stained, chipped, gapped, or otherwise unattractive? What should you do if you feel like you have to hide your smile?
At Alex Bratic Dental, we have an answer – cosmetic dental treatment. And one of our quickest and most economical cosmetic treatments is tooth bonding.
This is why we have compiled the following information about dental bonding, so you can decide if it might be a treatment you’d like to discuss with us.
Why Consider Tooth Bonding?
Tooth bonding can be a good substitute for porcelain veneers, Invisalign, or crowns for many dental conditions. As a bonus, it is relatively inexpensive compared to those treatments. Some of the conditions which tooth bonding can address are:
Small Chips or Fractures – Composite resin can be shaded to match your teeth and improve your smile. Because the resin bonds directly to your tooth, it’s ideal for repairing small chips or fractures in your teeth.
Gaps and Oddly Sized Teeth – Tooth bonding can change the shape and appearance of teeth. Bonding can be used to close gaps between teeth. Bonding can also be used to lengthen or build up a tooth that is smaller than the others, creating symmetry in your smile!
Exposed Root – Gum recession or other gum problems can leave your roots exposed, which can be quite painful and dangerous to your teeth. Unfortunately, gum tissue will does not grow back, so treatment is necessary. Tooth bonding is a great way to fill in the open spaces and protect exposed roots from further damage. Protecting the roots will also alleviate any existing sensitivity.
To repair decayed teeth – Composite resins can be used to fill some cavities.
What are the Steps of Tooth Bonding?
In most cases, anaesthesia is not necessary!
Your dentist will isolate the tooth from the gums to prevent saliva from interfering with the bonding process. A mildly acidic solution is placed on the teeth in order to gently roughen the surface to allow the bonding material and dental composite to stick to the teeth.
Next a bonding agent is applied to the teeth.
Your dentist will choose the shade of composite material based on the natural color of your teeth and place the composite onto the tooth in need of restoration. The composite is carved into the correct shape and hardened with an ultraviolet curing light. This is repeated until the restoration is the right size and shape. The material is then trimmed and polished to ensure it blends in with your natural teeth and your bite.
Durability and Care of Bonded Teeth
Bonding material can last a decade or more if properly cared for.
To maintain the best results for your bonded tooth, it is important to practice good oral hygiene.
Please follow these steps to care for your teeth after bonding:
- Keep your teeth clean by brushing and flossing regularly. Brush twice a day and floss at least once.
- Schedule regular cleanings with your Alex Bratic
- Use gentle toothpastes and soft-bristled toothbrushes that are safe for bonded teeth. Ask our staff for recommendations.
- Slice hard foods like apples and carrots before eating them, don’t bite into hard objects, and avoid acidic foods, or those that might stain.
- Avoid chewing on hard objects including candy, fingernails, pencils, or paperclips.
