On-the-go Oral Health For Your Busy Schedule

In these busy days of hobbies, households, social lives, and work, we have to fit our self-care routines in somewhere.

So, how does the average Australian fit everything into only 24 hours a day?

Sometimes they don’t. And sometimes it is the routine, little things that end up not getting done. Routine little things like dental hygiene and care.

If your dental health routine has taken a back seat to your hectic schedule, you might be pleased to hear that the focus of Dental Health Week (7 – 13 August) this year is Oral Health for Busy Lives, with a focus on helping us all balance schedule and health.

To help you harmonise your busy life and tip-top dental health, Alex Bratic Dental Care in Beenleigh offers several suggestions to ‘streamline’ your dental care routine.

Why Not Skip Dental Care?

Everyone knows that brushing and flossing your teeth is crucial to good hygiene and oral health.

But what exactly happens when you skip out on maintaining your oral hygiene?? An unhealthy mouth, especially if you have gum disease, may increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, poorly controlled diabetes, and preterm labor.

The case for good oral hygiene keeps getting stronger. It is important to understand the importance of oral health — and its connection to your overall health.

Nutrition: A “No Extra Time” Approach To Dental And General Health

The quality and consistency of foods, their nutritional composition and the combinations in which they are eaten can affect oral health.

And the beauty of good nutrition is that it doesn’t take much, if any, extra time to take care of. We already shop for food, eat at restaurants, and cook at home. Good nutrition just means choosing different foods.

For example:

Calcium-fortified juices, milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D, reducing the risk for tooth loss.

Crisp fruits and raw vegetables, like apples, carrots and celery, help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath.

Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C, and other nutrients from fruits and vegetables help protect gums and other tissues from cell damage and bacterial infection.

It Starts At Home And Takes Almost No Time

A good at-home dental hygiene program takes about five minutes a day, and in those five minutes you make an investment in more healthy and productive time in your future.

So, what does a good dental hygiene program consist of?

Brush your teeth twice a day. Take time to do a thorough job and use the proper technique (your Alex Bratic dentist can help you with this).

Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably.

Floss for oral health. You can’t reach the tight spaces between your teeth and under the gumline with a toothbrush. That’s why daily flossing is important.

Scrape your tongue. Scraping your tongue should be part of your normal routine, and can be done with your toothbrush, by pulling floss across the tongue, or with an OTC scraping tool.

Mouthwash. Mouthwash fights bacteria and leaves your breath fresh and clean. What’s to lose?

Even with a hectic lifestyle you can keep your teeth healthy and clean, and ensure healthy, happy, and productive days in the future.

Treat Your Dental Hygiene Like A Vacation

Carrying a dental kit with you in daily life allows you to extend the hours and locations in which you can practice good dental hygiene.

So, what goes in a dental kit? Pretty much what you’d expect.

Of course, practicing good dental hygiene outside of the house doesn’t mean you can skimp on your at-home care!
