Dental Check-up: More than just looking for decay

In my last Blog, I discussed the benefits of a check up in the early detection of tooth decay but a dental check up involves so much more than just looking for tooth decay.

The dentist will also look for signs of premature wear from clenching & grinding.

Early detection & implementing preventative strategies can potentially same thousands of dollars over the long term. Not to mention saving you many hours of operative dental treatment!

Look for Signs of Dental Erosion

As dentists we also look for signs of acid erosion, which has become more frequent with the increasing consumption of acidic beverages. Another cause of damage to teeth most people do not consider is that caused by incorrect brushing technique – either brushing too hard, using a hard bristle brush or both.

Demonstrate Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques

At Alex Bratic Dental Care I am always happy to demonstrate correct brushing and flossing techniques. The title dentist implies that we just look at teeth but we actually care for the mouth as a whole. A thorough examination involves careful examination of the gums, lips, cheeks & tongue. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that results in loss of gum attachment and bone supporting the teeth. In advanced disease the teeth can become loose & painful to the point.

Detect Early Signs of Gum Disease and Other Mouth Issues

Like tooth decay, early stages are generally painless. When detected early a lot of the effects are reversible. Studies show people with gum disease are more likely to suffer from heart disease and diabetes so having healthy gums will also improve your overall health.

We also check the lips, tongue & cheek for abnormal growths & pigmentations. There are a multitude of conditions that can affect the mouth but the most serious of course is oral cancer. This is much more common in smokers, particularly when combined with excessive alcohol intake. Like all forms of cancer, the prognosis is much better when detected early.

I am a firm believer that “prevention is better than cure.” A check up every six months (twice a year) is so important not only for the health of your teeth but also for your overall health & well being.
