Children are prone to dental emergencies just like any other age group. Their carefree nature and innocent behaviour make them an easy target of these risks. Knowing the right first aid steps is important to relieve pain as soon as possible.
Alex Bratic Dental Care offers comfort, convenience, and excellent care for your dental needs, particularly during dental emergencies.
Handling Dental Emergencies In Children
We have listed the most common dental emergencies experienced by children and the first aid steps you can use in case they happen.
Knocked Out Tooth
Children are very playful. They run everywhere not minding about the things around them that can hurt them. This can lead to knocked out teeth. In case of a knocked out tooth, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse your child’s mouth with clean water.
- Secure the knocked out tooth. Hold it by the crown and do not touch the root.
- If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub, scrape, or rub.
- If it is a permanent tooth, reinsert it in place and bite down gently on a clean piece of cloth.
- If it is a baby tooth, do not reinsert to avoid damage to the developing permanent tooth underneath.
- Soak the tooth in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist.
- Call and visit your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.
Toothache
Children are fond of eating sweets. Bacteria create acid from the sweets and starches children eat, which attacks the tooth enamel, leading to toothache. In case of a toothache, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse your child’s mouth using antiseptic mouthwash or salt-water (1/2 teaspoon of salt = 8 ounces of lukewarm water).
- Make sure that there is no food debris stuck in your child’s teeth. Brush and floss.
- Apply clove oil to the aching tooth to relieve pain and sensitivity. Do not give aspirin to your child nor put aspirin to the gums. This will only cause a chemical burn.
- If there is swelling, apply a cold compress.
- Visit your dentist immediately.
Broken Braces
Use the eraser end of a pencil to move the offending wire in place. Make sure that it is clean.
Cover the edges with cotton or gauze on your way to the dentist.
Bitten Tongue/Lips
The tongue and the lips together with the gums and cheeks are the soft tissues of the mouth. They are sensitive and delicate, and can easily bleed when injured. In case of a bitten tongue/lips, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse mouth with clean water.
- Apply pressure to the injured area by pressing a clean absorbent material to it.
- If there is swelling, hold ice over the swollen area.
- Visit your dentist immediately.
